Landslide protections at Holtsnúp to be ready by August
Landslide protection measures along Route 1 at Holtsnúp are set to be completed by August 2026 after a fatal accident last year prompted safety reevaluations.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has initiated construction of landslide protection measures along Route 1 near Holtsnúp, following an accident in March 2025 that resulted in a fatality. The safety improvements include cutting into the hillside over a 360-meter stretch and using the excavated material to reinforce about one kilometer of road surface. Furthermore, protective structures made from 'gabion grids' will be constructed over approximately 300 meters of the area, complemented by additional cushioning made of reinforced materials.
This decision comes after an investigation by the Transportation Accident Investigation Board revealed significant safety concerns in the region, prompting calls for immediate action to prevent future accidents. A woman tragically lost her life when a large boulder fell from the mountain and struck her vehicle. The report highlighted the urgency of implementing effective preventive measures to enhance traffic safety in this accident-prone area.
The construction is expected to be completed in August 2026, marking a crucial step toward improving safety along one of Iceland's key transport routes. The efforts reflect a growing awareness of infrastructure vulnerability in relation to natural hazards, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to protect both drivers and local residents.
