Nordlandsbanen opens for traffic in June

Nordlandsbanen is set to reopen for train traffic in June 2026 after a significant landslide damaged the route.

Nordlandsbanen is scheduled to resume operations in June 2026, following a substantial landslide that has kept sections of the line closed. The landslide occurred near Nesvatnet outside Levanger, leading to extensive damage along the railway. In response to this disruption, plans are in place to construct a temporary track west of the original line to ensure that train services can be restored as promptly as possible.

The rebuilding efforts are extensive and include replacing vast amounts of clay with stone down to bedrock, a significant undertaking aimed at ensuring safety for workers, local residents, and travelers. Kristine Jessen, regional director at Bane NOR, emphasized that safety is the top priority during this period of reconstruction. Only after train services are moved back onto a permanent track can work commence on restoring E6, the major highway that has also been affected by the landslide.

In the meantime, temporary solutions have been implemented, including a workshop in Bodø and a cargo terminal in Steinkjer, to support ongoing transportation needs. These measures highlight the importance of maintaining logistical operations despite the challenges posed by the disrupted rail line, aiming to minimize the impact on both logistics and local travel during this reconstruction phase.
