Belgium sets €10m bail for seized Russian tanker

Belgium has imposed a €10 million bail on the Russian-owned tanker Ethera, previously seized due to its association with circumventing Western sanctions on Russia's energy sector.

Belgium has instituted a €10 million bail for the Russian-owned tanker Ethera, which was seized on March 1 as part of efforts to address the use of shadow fleets by Russia to bypass Western sanctions. The Kremlin has been utilizing such vessels to maintain its energy exports despite restrictions imposed following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Belgian government, through this measure, underscores its commitment to enforcing EU sanctions against Russian entities and individuals involved in the ongoing conflict.

The Belgian Defence Minister, Theo Francken, stated that the administration is taking rigorous action against vessels linked to the shadow fleet used by Russia, viewing this operation as essential to protect the ecological integrity of the North Sea while simultaneously impeding the financial resources for Russia's military activities in Ukraine. The government has clarified that the tanker Ethera will not be permitted to depart until the bail is paid, inspections have been conducted, and necessary documentation is secured.

In the interim, the vessel’s crew, composed of 21 members—including a Russian captain and 13 crew members predominantly from India—will remain on board the Ethera. This situation highlights not only the direct impact of international sanctions on Russia’s maritime operations but also the broader geopolitical ramifications as various nations enforce measures to limit Russia's actions amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
