Apprenticeship in the Regions: Can This Learning Form Contribute to Regional Development?

A project promoting apprenticeships in Lithuania has successfully involved vocational education institutions across the country, demonstrating that apprenticeship can work effectively in both urban and smaller city contexts.

In recent years, Lithuania has undertaken its largest apprenticeship promotion project, "Apprenticeship - a New Opportunity for Me!" funded by the European Social Fund, which enabled 96 students enrolled in formal vocational education programs to learn through apprenticeship. This initiative has marked a significant milestone in vocational education by confirming that all vocational education institutions across Lithuania participated in the implementation of apprenticeships, effectively testing this learning approach in all regions of the country.

The assessment by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports highlights that the main achievement of this project is the demonstration that apprenticeships can be successfully applied not only in major cities but also in smaller towns. Furthermore, students were able to engage in apprenticeship training across nearly 100 different specialties, dispelling the myth that this system is suitable only for a few professions. This project represents a promising beginning towards integrating apprenticeships into a more constant educational framework.

Now, discussions are being held with all social partners to ensure that the apprenticeship model does not remain a temporary initiative but evolves into a consistently developed system. The successful trials in different regions could potentially reshape the vocational training landscape in Lithuania, fostering stronger connections between education and local industry needs, thereby contributing to regional development.
