Katariina Aule 'Leivalaul' Selected for Tampere Short Film Festival Program

Katariina Aule's short film 'Leivalaul' has been selected for the 'Generation XYZ' program at the 56th Tampere Film Festival.

Katariina Aule's short film 'Leivalaul' has been officially selected to be part of the prestigious 'Generation XYZ' program at the 56th Tampere Film Festival. Set to premiere in 2025, 'Leivalaul' is described as a historical horror thriller that features unexpected fantasy elements, transporting the audience to the 19th century, where a housewife named Leida aspires to become the lead singer of a traditional Estonian folk song.

The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Leida's children inadvertently consume spoiled bread, which leads to them singing a pop song from the future. This incident forces Leida to confront a dilemma regarding whether the song she hears is a blessing or a curse. The 'Generation XYZ' program aims to foster dialogue between different generations and perspectives in filmmaking. This year, out of hundreds of submissions, only 20 films from 16 different countries were selected for the program, highlighting the exclusive nature of this honor.

For Aule, this selection marks a return to a familiar venue, as her previous short film 'Heiki teisel pool' was also chosen for the 'Generation XYZ' program at the 2023 Tampere Film Festival, where it received special mention from the jury. The recognition of both of her films in this competitive program underscores her growing influence in the international short film scene, not only showcasing her unique storytelling but also bringing Estonian cinema into the spotlight on a global stage.
