In Ķekava municipality, a driver fatally hits a pedestrian

A pedestrian was killed by a car in Ķekava, Latvia, amidst a day marked by multiple traffic accidents.

On Tuesday in Latvia, there were 143 registered traffic accidents, resulting in one fatality and five injuries, as reported by the State Police via the LETA news agency. Among these incidents, a tragic accident occurred around 1 PM in Ķekava municipality, where a driver of a 'Peugeot' struck a pedestrian who died at the scene. The State Police have initiated a criminal process to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

In addition to the pedestrian's death, four injured individuals were recorded in accidents in the Riga region, alongside another in Latgale. Notably, all those injured in the Riga region were also pedestrians. The high number of accidents raises concerns about pedestrian safety and traffic regulations enforcement in the area.

Furthermore, in response to increasing road safety violations, the police arrested five drivers across Latvia for operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, including a driver in Riga and several others in Zemgale and Kurzeme. One of those arrested had also used narcotic substances. The severity of these incidents indicates a need for stricter law enforcement measures, as offenders faced heavy penalties, including vehicle confiscation and substantial fines.
