Meeting at the Presidency – discussing migration policy and specific initiatives

The President of Lithuania is holding a meeting to discuss new initiatives aimed at achieving effective migration policy that strengthens national identity.

A meeting at the Lithuanian presidency is set to discuss specific initiatives that align with the President's goal of managing migration effectively while preserving the national identity. The President's advisor, Ridas Jasiulionis, indicated that this is the second such meeting, following one held last October, and it focuses on creating a national consensus regarding migration policies. This is perceived as crucial for the national security, as emphasized by the President's chief advisor on national security, Deividas Matulionis.

During the upcoming discussions, the president aims to formulate a national agreement that takes into account the expectations of society, as well as economic and social interests, in relation to Lithuania's national security. The situation concerning migration has evolved into a pressing matter, transcending beyond social and economic concerns, to include considerations of national safety. This shift reflects a broader European concern regarding migration patterns and their implications on national policies.

According to the Migration Department's data, as of February 1, nearly 81,000 Ukrainian citizens, 50,000 Belarusian citizens, and about 14,000 Russian nationals reside in Lithuania, highlighting the diverse migration landscape in the country. Moreover, the presence of a growing number of citizens from countries like Uzbekistan (around 11,000), India (8,000), and Tajikistan points to an increasingly multicultural society which the government aims to integrate while ensuring the safeguarding of Lithuanian identity.
