Škoda strengthens its position in the VW Group thanks to cell-to-pack technology
Škoda has inaugurated a new battery system assembly hall, becoming the largest producer of such systems within the Volkswagen Group.
Škoda has opened a new battery system assembly hall in Mladá Boleslav, marking its emergence as the largest producer of electric vehicle battery systems in the Volkswagen Group. The facility, which spans 55,000 square meters and cost 205 million euros, boasts an impressive production rate of one battery system every 60 seconds, resulting in over 1,100 units produced daily and a projection of 335,000 annually. This significant investment highlights Škoda's commitment to expanding its capabilities in electric vehicle technology.
The new assembly hall features 131 robots and achieves an automation level of 84%, covering every aspect from cell preparation, assembly, welding, to the final system integration. Škoda's journey into battery system production is not new, as approximately 1.4 million battery systems have already been manufactured in Mladá Boleslav since 2019. The new facility represents a strategic enhancement of their existing expertise and production capabilities in the evolving electric vehicle market.
Particularly notable is the adoption of cell-to-pack technology in this new facility, which streamlines the production process by reducing the number of steps required to create battery packs for mass-market models. In contrast to traditional methods, which involve assembling individual cells into modules before combining modules into packs, cell-to-pack technology facilitates a more efficient production line, essential for meeting the increasing demand for electric vehicles across Europe.
