Anambra emerges ‘Top Fan’ favourite at Google award
Anambra State has won the 'Top Fan Vote' category at the inaugural Google Maps Platform Awards 2025 for its innovative digitisation of property tax systems.
Anambra State has gained international recognition by winning the 'Top Fan Vote' at the inaugural Google Maps Platform Awards 2025, thanks to its pioneering project aimed at digitising property tax systems. This award highlights Anambra’s successful implementation of Google Maps and Earth Engine technologies to enhance property enumeration and mapping accuracy, which are pivotal for improving the state's internally-generated revenue through effective geospatial governance solutions.
The announcement was made during a ceremony where the Executive Chairman of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, Dr. Greg Ezeilo, received the award on behalf of the state government. He emphasized that this accolade serves as a validation of the technological reforms that have been actively pursued to modernize the property tax administration. Ezeilo also mentioned that the APLUC mapping initiative, which started over a year ago, has greatly benefited from existing geospatial technologies, allowing the state to compile a comprehensive digital representation of property data.
The recognition from an esteemed institution such as Google not only enhances Anambra's image on a global platform but also encourages further investment and development within the state. The success of the digitisation initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the local economy and strengthen governance through improved transparency and accountability in property tax collection.
