Major generation unit of Paute Molino plant enters maintenance after 20 years of continuous operation
The fourth generation unit of the Paute Molino hydroelectric plant in Ecuador has entered major maintenance after 20 years of continuous operation.
After two decades of continuous operation, the fourth generation unit of the Paute Molino hydroelectric plant has begun major maintenance. This unit, with a capacity of 150 megawatts (MW), is part of the Paute Integral Hydroelectric Complex, which is the largest in Ecuador with a total capacity of 1,100 MW. The maintenance is being coordinated by the Ecuadorian Electric Corporation (Celec) and its southern business unit, Celec Sur, alongside the National Electricity Operator (Cenace), following the recommendations from Celec's technicians and the manufacturers of the equipment.
The maintenance work is deemed essential to extend the operational lifespan of the generation units. Wilson Enríquez, the head of the Molino plant, highlighted that these major maintenance activities are critical after roughly 20 years of service. Some of the scheduled maintenance tasks include disassembling the generator's rotor to access the stator and re-crowning the stator, ensuring that the system continues to operate efficiently and effectively.
Such extensive maintenance not only ensures the reliability and efficiency of the hydroelectric plant but also demonstrates Ecuador's commitment to maintaining its renewable energy infrastructure. This intervention is crucial for sustaining the energy supply in the country and upholding the operational standards expected of one of Ecuador's primary sources of electricity generation, thereby impacting the national energy matrix significantly.
