Police say they tried to arrest suspects in rape after report, but the apartment was already empty
Brazilian police were unable to apprehend suspects linked to a reported rape of a teenager shortly after the crime due to their departure from the scene.
In a concerning case of alleged sexual assault, police in Rio de Janeiro responded quickly after a 17-year-old girl reported being raped in an apartment in Copacabana on January 31. According to Delegado Γngelo Lages, officers arrived moments after the report was made but discovered the apartment empty, having been rented through a rental application. They were unable to detain the suspects in the act, which has complicated the investigation.
The incident occurred at roughly 8 PM, with security footage corroborating the timeline of the suspects entering and exiting the apartment, along with the victim. After the initial report was made by the victim to family and friends, she proceeded to the police station that same night, a move that underscores her determination to seek justice. The police emphasized that while they could not apprehend the suspects at the scene, they began an investigation immediately and took the critical step of having the victim examined for forensic evidence.
Delegado Lages highlighted the importance of the forensic examination, which showed compatibility with the victim's account of the assault. This can be seen as a pivotal element in the ongoing investigation, as it lends credibility to the victim's claims. As authorities continue to pursue leads in this case, the incident raises significant questions about the safety of women in urban environments, as well as the efficacy of law enforcement's response to such sensitive crimes.
