Ban on Being on Ice in All Water Bodies in Riga
Riga has enforced a ban on accessing the ice of all water bodies in its administrative territory starting March 4 due to adverse weather conditions and safety concerns.
Starting March 4, 2023, the Riga municipality has imposed a ban on accessing the ice on all water bodies within the city's administrative borders, as announced by the External Communications Department of the Riga City Council. This decision comes in light of current weather conditions and forecasts that indicate a heightened risk associated with walking on thin ice. The municipality emphasizes the need for public safety and wellbeing, particularly during this high-risk period.
The Riga municipal police have issued warnings urging citizens to prioritize their health and safety by refraining from venturing onto the ice. They also advised adults to closely supervise children and to be attentive to the safety of those around them. This community-focused message stresses the collective responsibility of the public to adhere to safety precautions during adverse weather conditions, which can present serious dangers to life and health.
Furthermore, individuals found on the ice during the enforcement of this ban may face a warning or a fine of up to 100 euros. The police have requested that anyone spotting individuals on the ice should report them immediately, emphasizing the municipality's proactive approach in safeguarding public safety as the ice conditions deteriorate with changing weather.
