Over the weekend, more than 200 people in Riga violated the ban on walking on the ice of water bodies

Over 200 people in Riga violated a ban on walking on ice, prompting police to educate the public on safety risks.

During the recent weekend, the municipal police reported that over 200 individuals were removed from the ice in various areas around Riga, including 86 from the Daugava River and around 100 from Mangaļsalas, highlighting the dangers associated with ice walking. Local authorities have opted for a preventive approach, focusing on raising awareness rather than issuing fines at this time, with an emphasis on the safety of residents and visitors.

Ieva Lukaža-Apalupa, a representative of the Riga municipal police, indicated that foreign visitors are often the ones who disregard the ice ban. Many are misled by the sight of tracks on the ice or others walking, falsely believing that it is permitted. The police are actively patrolling the ice and monitoring areas through video surveillance, urging everyone to be cautious and evaluate safety risks while using the designated ice walking spots marked on ice maps.

The ban on accessing the Daugava's ice came into effect last Saturday and is part of broader safety measures due to varying ice conditions. It serves to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. Authorities continue to remind citizens the importance of obeying these restrictions for their own safety, particularly given the risks posed by unpredictable ice conditions, especially for those unfamiliar with local safety protocols.
