Edilson Carvalho de Sousa Júnior, a 55-year-old coloproctologist and professor, tragically died in a motorcycle accident on BR-343 in Teresina. With over thirty years of medical experience, he was a well-respected figure in his field, serving as the director of teaching and research at Hospital São Marcos and as an adjunct professor at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI). He is remembered for his dedication to educating future medical professionals as well as his contributions to the field of proctology.

Originally from Parnaíba, Edilson Carvalho was an active member of the Brazilian Society of Coloproctology and had extensive expertise in proctological surgery, medical education, and cancer genetics, particularly concerning colorectal cancer and hereditary breast cancer. After earning his medical degree from UFPI in 1994, he advanced his studies with a Master's in Genetics from the Federal University of Pernambuco in 2000 and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the State University of Ceará in 2010.

His untimely passing not only leaves a significant gap in the medical community but also impacts his family, as he was married and a father to three children. The loss of such an influential and dedicated medical professional raises concerns about road safety and the vulnerabilities that all motorcyclists face, underscoring the importance of traffic safety measures for preventing similar tragedies.
