BH councilwoman receives death threats; police identify suspect
A councilwoman in Belo Horizonte received death threats via email, prompting police to identify a suspect.
In Belo Horizonte, Councilwoman Juhlia Santos, representing the PSOL party, has reported receiving death threats through emails laden with racism and transphobia. The emails not only contained hateful language but also detailed information about her daily life and her family, raising significant concerns for her safety. The threats were sent to both her institutional and personal email accounts, as well as those of the Municipal Chamber's Presidency and Ombudsman.
In response to the threats, the Chamber of Municipalities has increased security measures for Councilwoman Santos, including providing her with escorts and the presence of the Municipal Guard for her protection. The President of the Chamber, Juliano Lopes, has condemned the threats as serious and stated that the legislative body is collaborating with law enforcement and the Public Ministry to ensure Santos's safety. He emphasized that no council member should be hindered from exercising the authority granted to them by the citizens of Belo Horizonte.
The Civil Police of Minas Gerais has initiated an investigation following Councilwoman Santos's reports, asserting that they are actively pursuing leads that could lead to the apprehension of the suspect. This incident highlights the ongoing issues of political harassment and the need for enhanced safety and support for elected officials in Brazil, especially those from marginalized communities who often face greater risks in their line of work.
