The Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions has appointed Dr. Corneille Karekezi as its new Chairperson during a significant meeting at the African Union Summit.
The Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions (AAMFI) has seen a leadership change with the appointment of Dr. Corneille Karekezi as Chairperson of its Governing Council, succeeding Samaila Zubairu. This appointment was made official during the Ninth Meeting of the AAMFI Governing Council, which took place on February 14, 2026, in conjunction with the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government held during the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Dr. Karekezi, who also serves as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the African Reinsurance Corporation, takes the helm at a critical time for African financial institutions. The AAMFI aims to enhance collaboration among multilateral financial bodies in Africa, focusing on the mobilization of long-term capital and strengthening the continent's financial framework. His leadership will play a crucial role in promoting Africa-led solutions to various development financing challenges that the continent faces.
The appointment of new members, including the West African Development Bank and the Regional Maritime Development Bank, marks a significant expansion of the Alliance, reinforcing the collective effort to address the region's unique financial needs. This effort aligns with the broader goal of fortifying Africa’s economic independence and sustainable growth through indigenous financial strategies and partnerships, which are essential for realizing the continent’s development objectives.
