Reps decry absence of 10 rectors at budget defence session
The Nigerian House of Representatives is disappointed by the absence of 10 rectors at a budget defense session for polytechnics, highlighting issues of institutional compliance.
The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnics and Other Higher Technical Education in Nigeria has expressed serious concern over the lack of attendance by rectors during the 2026 budget defense session. Out of the 14 federal polytechnics invited, only 4 were present, indicating a significant lack of participation. The Chairman of the Committee, Fuad Laguda, criticized the absence of 10 rectors, calling it unacceptable and a reflection of weak adherence to legislative oversight requirements.
Laguda noted that out of 36 federal polytechnics in Nigeria, only 22 had submitted their budget reports by the time of the exercise, underscoring a concerning trend of poor compliance among educational institutions. This situation not only raises red flags about the management and operational capabilities of these polytechnics but also signals possible implications for government funding and the overall quality of higher education in the country.
The low turnout at such a key session emphasizes the need for stronger accountability mechanisms within Nigeria's higher education system. As the government looks to allocate funds and support these institutions, the lack of representation from the rectors could hinder effective decision-making and resource allocation, ultimately affecting the educational outcomes and services provided by these polytechnics.
