The city of Capivari in São Paulo, Brazil, has introduced a system that utilizes 50 surveillance cameras equipped with artificial intelligence to catch individuals committing illegal waste disposal in prohibited areas. Since the implementation of this technology in early January, the local government has reported seven instances of illegal dumping that were flagged by the system. The initiative aims to enhance environmental protection by actively monitoring and addressing waste management violations in urban spaces.
The AI-driven monitoring system works by compiling data on situations that warrant attention from environmental agents tasked with enforcing waste disposal regulations. When the cameras detect suspicious activity related to illegal dumping, the system triggers an immediate alert to the central monitoring hub, which then coordinates with local enforcement teams to respond to the incident. This approach not only increases the efficiency of monitoring but also strengthens the accountability of individuals and businesses regarding waste disposal practices.
In terms of penalties, the city imposes a fine of 400 Municipal Tax Units, which translates to approximately R$ 1,472.00 for each violation of the waste disposal regulations.
