AI cameras capture cell phone use and lack of seat belts and are multiplying along São Paulo highways
AI cameras installed on São Paulo highways have been capturing drivers using cell phones and not wearing seat belts, resulting in increased fines.
In 2023, a driver in Campinas, Brazil, was caught 11 times for not wearing a seat belt, thanks to the recent installation of AI cameras on highways in São Paulo. These cameras are designed to record high-definition images of drivers who are texting or talking on their phones, as well as passengers not wearing seat belts, particularly in the front seats. The incident highlights the effectiveness of utilizing technology to enforce road safety regulations.
These AI-equipped cameras are quickly spreading across São Paulo's roads. For example, the northern section of the Rodoanel, inaugurated last December, features 32 such cameras. The increase in surveillance is a strategic move to enhance road safety, as officials report a significant reduction in infractions since their deployment. Alberto Correia Júnior, an operations manager at the road management company Renovias, suggests that such enforcement measures encourage safer driving habits among motorists.
The broader implications of these developments reflect a growing trend in Brazil to leverage artificial intelligence in public safety. By addressing the common issues of distracted driving and seat belt compliance, the initiative aims not only to reduce accidents but also to promote responsible driving behavior. As more highways adopt similar technologies, the hope is that the number of traffic violations and deadly incidents will decrease significantly, contributing to safer roadways for all.
