Former councilor and ex-assembly member from El Oro detained in drug trafficking operation
A former councilor and assembly member from El Oro, Ecuador, was detained in a major drug trafficking operation linked to the Albanian mafia.
The recent operation entitled 'Costa' led to the arrest of former councilor and ex-assembly member SalomΓ³n F. along with fifteen others as part of an effort to dismantle a criminal organization believed to be a front for the Albanian mafia operating in Ecuador. The operation, executed by the National Police, included 26 raids across various provinces including Guayaquil, Machala, Quito, and Milagro, highlighting the widespread nature of the criminal network.
Evidence collected during the raids indicated that this gang was involved in tainting shipping containers in Ecuadorian ports with drugs intended for international distribution. The Ministry of Interior reported the seizure of nearly $1 million in cash, luxury vehicles, jewelry, and firearms, which points to the sophisticated level of organization within this criminal group. Minister of Interior John Reimberg emphasized that the group demonstrated clear and established functional roles among its members, underscoring its organized nature and significant threat to public safety.
This case adds to the growing concern regarding organized crime and drug trafficking in Ecuador, particularly as it relates to foreign influences such as the Albanian mafia. As investigations continue, the implications of this operation may extend beyond local law enforcement, potentially affecting international drug regulations and the response from both Ecuadorian and global authorities to combat such crimes effectively.
