Man died during MRI – Yle: Anesthesiologist suspected of involuntary manslaughter

A man died during an MRI procedure, leading to police suspicions against an anesthesiologist for involuntary manslaughter in Kuopio, Finland.

In January 2025, during an MRI procedure at a private medical facility in Kuopio, a middle-aged man tragically passed away. Reports indicate that an investigation by the Accident Investigation Center (Otkes) revealed deficiencies in the medical center's self-monitoring and risk management protocols. The investigation also highlighted clear shortcomings in the actions of the anesthesiologist, who was responsible for administering anesthesia during the procedure.

The police have confirmed that the only suspect in connection with the incident is the anesthesiologist. While the doctor was providing services to the private medical center Pihlajalinna, there are currently no allegations against the medical center or its staff regarding any criminal activities related to the incident. This significant development has raised concerns about the standards and safety practices within private healthcare settings in Finland.

Reports from Yle suggest that the anesthesiologist holds valid licenses to perform specialized anesthesia services, and there are presently no regulatory actions or investigations active against him or his practice by the Authority for Health and Welfare. This incident prompts further scrutiny into medical practices and the responsibilities of healthcare professionals in ensuring patient safety during medical procedures.
