Investigation reveals why a man died after MRI in Kuopio - doctor administered too much anesthesia

An investigation by the Finnish Accident Investigation Authority concluded that a man died following an MRI due to excessive anesthesia administered by the anesthesiologist.

The Finnish Accident Investigation Authority (Otkes) has completed its investigation into the death of a middle-aged man who died following an MRI procedure in Kuopio. The patient was sedated by an anesthesiologist on January 2, 2025, at the Pihlajalinna Medical Center for imaging studies. Unfortunately, the man did not regain consciousness and passed away later in the hospital.

According to Otkes, the man's death was attributed to multiple factors involving the anesthesiologist and the medical facility's protocols. The anesthesiologist deviated from national guidelines governing safe anesthesia administration outside of operating rooms, administering significantly more sedative than what was necessary for the patient to remain still during the imaging. Additionally, the patient suffered from inadequate oxygen supply, as the anesthesiologist set the oxygen mask flow at a considerably lower rate than recommended.

This mismanagement led to the patient's airway loss, respiratory failure, and ultimately, cardiac arrest. The case highlights critical safety concerns in anesthesia practices and raises questions about procedures and training in outpatient settings. The findings could have implications for future regulations and safety standards in similar medical environments.
