SUS begins to offer free virtual assistance for adults with gambling and betting addiction

The SUS is launching a free telehealth service for adults over 18 years old struggling with gambling and betting issues, accessible through the Meu SUS Digital app.

Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) has initiated a free telehealth service aimed at adults over 18 who are facing issues related to gambling and betting, particularly online. This new offering not only caters to those suffering from gambling addiction but also extends support to their families and support networks. The service will be accessible through the Meu SUS Digital app, making it easier for individuals to reach out for help remotely.

The Ministry of Health has set a target of approximately 600 monthly consultations in collaboration with the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital as part of the Institutional Development Support Program of the Unified Health System (Proadi-SUS). The service has a projected investment of R$ 2.5 million, highlighting the government's commitment to address mental health challenges related to gambling addiction. This initiative is especially significant as it provides a private and stigma-free way for individuals to seek help.

Despite the potential benefits, data from 2025 revealed that SUS had only recorded 6,157 in-person consultations for gambling and betting-related issues. This low uptake has often been attributed to factors like shame and social stigma that inhibit individuals from seeking in-person assistance. By offering virtual care, the SUS aims to overcome these barriers and improve access to mental health resources for those in need.
