SUS starts telehealth service for people with betting addiction
The Brazilian health system has launched a telehealth program for individuals struggling with gambling addiction through online betting platforms.
The Brazilian Ministry of Health has initiated a new telehealth program designed to assist individuals facing issues related to digital gambling addiction, commonly referred to as betting. This program, inaugurated on a Tuesday, is a collaborative effort with the Hospital Sírio-Libanês located in São Paulo and arises from discussions initiated in December of the previous year. It aims to address the growing concern surrounding an increase in gambling-related problems among the populace since 2019.
The program is expected to cater to approximately 600 patients each month, providing free support through a user-friendly interface via the Meu SUS Digital app, available on both Android and iOS platforms. To access the service, users must log in with their government-issued accounts and follow a straightforward process to reach the appropriate help section. The first step involves completing a self-assessment test that gauges potential risks associated with gambling habits, allowing for a tailored response to their issues.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Brazilian government to mitigate the negative impacts associated with the rise of online betting. By facilitating access to mental health resources and support services, the initiative not only addresses individual needs but also reflects a growing recognition of addiction as a significant public health challenge, affirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens' well-being amid the widespread proliferation of digital betting platforms.
