NRK: Norway Could Be a Hole in Europe’s Drone Wall – Defense Is Unprepared to Defend Against Drones

Norway’s defense forces are reportedly unprepared for potential drone attacks along its eastern border, according to NRK.

The Norwegian Armed Forces are currently ill-equipped to handle the rising threat of drone attacks, particularly along the country's eastern border, as highlighted in a report by Norway's national broadcaster, NRK. Nils Håheim-Sæersin, a senior engineer with Norway’s drone working group at the Norcen research institute, emphasizes the urgent need for Norway to acknowledge and address the potential threats posed by drones in the North. He notes that the country remains disorganized and exposed, particularly in regions such as Finnmark, which are vulnerable to aerial assaults.

This situation comes at a time when other nations, notably Poland, have demonstrated the capability to neutralize drone threats, having shot down Russian drones that were operating in their airspace. Håheim-Sæersin points out that the lack of preparedness in Norway means that similar drone operations could occur without effective countermeasures, leaving the country’s defense capabilities wanting. The concern is compounded by the rising geopolitical tensions in the region, particularly involving Russian activities around its borders, which necessitate a reevaluation of Norway's national security strategy.

Moreover, there are discussions within the European Union regarding the establishment of a comprehensive drone defense structure along the eastern border of the EU, which Norway is eager to join in order to bolster its own defenses. The anxiety among local residents in areas such as Kirkenes, close to the Finnish-Russian border, reflects the broader unease regarding national security in the wake of potential drone warfare. This situation underscores the importance of international cooperation and preparedness in the face of emerging aerial threats.
