Commander of the Armed Forces: Norway Prepares for Russia's Ground Attack
Norway's defense forces are making plans in response to the potential military aggression from Russia, particularly regarding the northern territories.
Norway is preparing for the possibility of military aggression from Russia in the north, as articulated by the Chief of Defence, General Eirik Kristoffersen, in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian. Kristoffersen indicates that Russia's attempts to seize Norwegian land could be framed as necessary for the protection of its nuclear arsenal, necessitating serious military planning on Norway's part for a potential ground attack scenario.
The backdrop of this tension is underscored by the proximity of Russia's nuclear stockpile, predominantly positioned on the Kola Peninsula, just 100 kilometers from Norway's border. Kristoffersen highlights the stationing of Russian nuclear submarines in Gadzhievo, a military facility that attests to the strategic vulnerability faced by Norway. Norway remains vigilant and is actively devising contingency plans to counter any underlying threats from its eastern neighbor, especially in an increasingly volatile international climate.
While the Norwegian commander considers the threats posed by Russia, he has expressed skepticism regarding U.S. President Donald Trump's assertions that Russia or China have military intentions toward Greenland in the Arctic region. Kristoffersen insists that Norway’s intelligence services maintain robust assessments of the situation, indicating Norway's commitment to security and the need for preparedness in the context of regional geopolitical dynamics.
