The government does not decide on the promotion to general rank for three interior service officials due to 'technical reasons'
The Latvian government postponed its decision on granting the rank of general to three officials in the Ministry of the Interior due to technical reasons related to a remote meeting.
On Tuesday, the Latvian government decided to postpone discussions regarding the promotion of two deputy commanders of the State Fire and Rescue Service and the head of the State Police's Riga department to the rank of general for 'technical reasons' during a remote meeting. The Interior Ministry explained that the matter typically requires in-person meetings, which contributed to delaying the decision.
The three officials in question are Colonel Jānis Grīnbergs and Colonel Ivars Nakurts from the State Fire and Rescue Service, as well as Colonel Juris Staļģevics from the State Police. All candidates currently meet the necessary criteria for receiving such a promotion, as stated by the authorities. The government is expected to revisit the promotion decision in the following week, indicating that it remains a significant issue within the Ministry of the Interior.
Presently, the State Police has two generals: Chief Armands Ruks and the Head of the Main Administrative Department Normunds Grūbis. Meanwhile, the head of the State Fire and Rescue Service, Mārtiņš Baltmanis, holds the general rank. This upcoming decision is crucial as it impacts the leadership structure within these vital public safety organizations in Latvia, reflecting the government’s approach to fostering leadership within its security services.
