Proposal to Increase Allowances for Technical Workers in State and Local Government Institutions
The Latvian State Chancellery has proposed an increase in allowances for technical workers within state and municipal institutions amid planned budget cuts.
The Latvian State Chancellery has put forward a proposal to increase the allowances for technical workers employed in state and local government institutions. This comes in light of a government decision made on January 13 to reduce the maximum allowance permissible this year for these workers. The proposed changes aim to balance the need for budgetary allocations under the 'Security' priorities while also consolidating compensation expenditures.
Under the current plan, the maximum allowance for technical workers is set to decrease from 30% to 20%, effective from 2026. These allowances are intended for employees who take on additional duties, such as covering for absent staff, or those making significant contributions towards the strategic objectives of their institutions. This adjustment reflects an effort to manage governmental budgeting in the face of challenges while attempting to motivate and compensate workers adequately for their added responsibilities.
Moreover, the government has also outlined exceptions to the allowances, where certain conditions may allow for higher percentages to be granted. This initiative signals the government's recognition of the essential roles played by technical workers, particularly in light of upcoming budget reallocations, highlighting the delicate balance between fiscal responsibility and personnel motivational strategies in public service sectors.
