Paavo Järvi will start as the principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 2028

Conductor Paavo Järvi will take over as principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2028 following Edward Gardner's departure.

Conductor Paavo Järvi has been announced as the new principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, set to start in 2028. Järvi's appointment follows the conclusion of Edward Gardner's contract and comes after Järvi's successful collaboration with the orchestra during a New Year's concert tour in China, where he felt a strong connection with the ensemble. He expressed his excitement about taking on this prestigious role, stating that he grew up listening to recordings of the orchestra.

In addition to his upcoming role with the London Philharmonic, Järvi has an impressive resume, having served as the principal conductor of the Bremen German Chamber Philharmonic and currently leading the Tonhalle Orchester in Zurich since 2019. Järvi plans to introduce both contemporary and classical Estonian music to London audiences and intends to commission new works from emerging composers from his home country.

Järvi's first performance with the London Philharmonic Orchestra will be on March 4, where he will conduct a concert featuring works by Tchaikovsky and Sibelius at the Royal Festival Hall. His appointment is seen as a significant step for the orchestra as it continues to nurture diverse and innovative programming under new leadership.
