Paavo Järvi to succeed Edward Gardner at helm of London Philharmonic

Paavo Järvi will become the new chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra starting from the 2028-29 season, succeeding Edward Gardner.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that Paavo Järvi will take over as chief conductor starting in the 2028-29 season. Järvi, a distinguished conductor born into a noted Estonian musical family, is well-regarded in the classical music community and brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles with various prestigious orchestras worldwide. His appointment comes as the current chief conductor, Edward Gardner, is set to conclude his tenure following the completion of his contract.

At 63, Järvi has had a stellar career, having worked with orchestras across the globe such as the Cincinnati Symphony and Orchestre de Paris, where he served as music director from 2010 to 2016. He has also led the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen for over two decades, showcasing his long-standing commitment to orchestral music. His background includes training at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, where he was mentored by music legends including Leonard Bernstein.

Järvi's new role at the London Philharmonic will mark a significant chapter in his career, bringing his extensive experience and innovative approaches to one of the UK’s leading orchestras.
