The War in Ukraine Will End, but Threats to Europe Will Persist, Says Nausėda

Lithuania's President Gitanas Nausėda stated that while the war in Ukraine is expected to end, threats to Europe will continue, as indicated by intelligence assessments.

Lithuania's President Gitanas Nausėda announced on Tuesday that Lithuanian intelligence agencies predict the end of the war in Ukraine, though this conclusion does not reduce the threats posed to Europe. He emphasized that peace talks, although they might not happen soon, are expected to lead to the conclusion of the conflict in Ukraine. This development is based on assessments from the State Defense Council, which will soon make the unclassified version of their security threat evaluation public.

Despite the optimism regarding the war's end, Nausėda warned that dangers to the region and the broader European continent would remain. He remarked that the machinery of war being operated by Russia has escalated and continues to strengthen its military capabilities, stating, "the military conflict is not inevitable". His comments reflect a cautious approach, suggesting that even if there is a cessation of hostilities, Russia's military presence and activities would still pose a significant risk.

Furthermore, the State Defense Council, presided over by President Nausėda, comprises key leaders, including the Prime Minister, Speaker of the Parliament, Minister of Defense, and the Commander of the Armed Forces. Nausėda’s statements underscore the ongoing complexities of security in Europe, highlighting the need for sustained vigilance and preparedness in light of potential regional threats that may arise despite the end of the war in Ukraine.
