G. Nausėda: all of Russia's actions show that the aggressor is only simulating negotiations
Lithuania's President Gitanas Nausėda stated that Russia is not prepared for peace negotiations and only pretends to engage in talks while attempting to demoralize the Ukrainian people.
During a discussion at the Munich Security Conference, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda expressed his skepticism regarding Russia's commitment to meaningful peace negotiations, asserting that Russia's daily actions demonstrate its lack of readiness for peace. He speculated that Russia would not be prepared for negotiations this year or even in 2026, suggesting a timeline of possibly 2027 or 2028 for any serious discussions. Nausėda emphasized that Russia's false engagement in the negotiation process is largely aimed at undermining Ukrainian morale.
Nausėda has praised the resilience of the Ukrainian people, who have endured opposition from a significantly larger aggressor for the past four years. He acknowledged the formidable challenges that Ukrainians face and how their suffering has been a continuous toll as they withstand Russian aggression. Importantly, he stated that the victory of Ukraine cannot be achieved without the support of the European Union, highlighting the need for cohesive and united decisions among EU member states and their transatlantic partners.
He also recognized that decision-making within the EU is not always straightforward, often hindered by delays and differing opinions among member states. However, he reiterated Lithuania's commitment to making the necessary decisions to support Ukraine, emphasizing that solidarity and cooperation among European and transatlantic allies are crucial in addressing the ongoing crisis and combatting Russian aggression effectively.
