Seven suspects of militia involvement are indicted and have arrest warrants in Araruama, RJ
The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro has indicted seven individuals suspected of being part of a militia operating in Araruama, with arrests underway.
The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) has filed charges and secured arrest warrants for seven suspects believed to be members of a militia in Araruama, located in the Lakes Region. Law enforcement agents from the Security Coordination and Intelligence (CSI/MPRJ) are executing these warrants as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organized crime in the area. These suspects are accused of various crimes, including the appropriation of properties, extortion of local residents and merchants, and controlling illegal transportation lines. Investigations led by the Special Action Group against Organized Crime (GAECO/MPRJ) revealed that members of the militia maintained their grip on the region through armed intimidation, homicide, and robbery, illustrating the severe threat they pose to public safety and the rule of law in the area. Among those indicted are former military police officer João Carlos Alves Machado and ex-councilor Sérgio Roberto Egger de Moura, identified as the ringleaders of the organized crime group. The suspects are currently detained at the 126th precinct in Cabo Frio and are expected to be transferred to the prison battalion by the Military Police, reflecting an aggressive approach by the state authorities to tackle militia activities that have long plagued the region.
