Can a Used Cheese Slicer Be Stored On the Kitchen Counter and Used Again Without Worry? Expert Responds

A survey conducted among readers reveals varying opinions on the proper storage of kitchen utensils like butter knives and cheese slicers, with most favoring different methods of storage after use.

In a recent survey by Ilta-Sanomat, Finnish readers were asked for their views on the proper storage practices for kitchen tools, particularly focusing on butter knives and cheese slicers. The survey highlighted differing opinions on how to keep these utensils after use, indicating diverse home cooking habits and food handling practices among respondents. For instance, 33% of participants believed that butter knives should be placed on top of the butter container in the refrigerator after use, while others preferred leaving it on the kitchen counter until it was needed again.

The results also revealed that there are four main practices concerning butter knife storage: leaving the knife on the counter, placing it directly into the dishwasher, or even uniquely, storing it within a carved-out section of the margarine container in the fridge. On the matter of cheese slicers, the trend was somewhat similar, with 57% of people responding that they rinse the slicer and leave it on the counter until the next time it is required, while 28% opt for cleaning it in the dishwasher.

These findings not only reflect personal preferences but also open up discussions about food safety and hygiene in food preparation areas. The variety of practices indicated by the survey results suggests a need for clearer guidelines on the safe and hygienic storage of kitchen utensils to prevent cross-contamination and ensure food safety in kitchens throughout Finland.
