Will Apple’s budget-priced iPhone 17e make a splash in China’s tough smartphone market?
The presale of Apple's budget iPhone 17e begins soon, but experts doubt its competitiveness against local rivals due to perceived performance limitations.
Apple is set to release its budget-priced iPhone 17e in China, with presales starting this Wednesday and a wider launch on March 11. However, industry experts, including Guo Tianxiang from IDC China, have expressed skepticism about the device's ability to compete in China's highly competitive smartphone market, citing its use of outdated components and technology. While the iPhone 17e features an improved chip, areas such as imaging and display quality have not seen the necessary advancements compared to both the higher-end iPhone models and local Chinese competitors.
The pricing strategy for the iPhone 17e begins at 4,499 yuan (approximately US$653), allowing it to qualify for a national subsidy program for electronics priced below 6,000 yuan. Despite this, Guo highlights significant shortcomings that could deter potential buyers, particularly against competing models from domestic brands that boast superior camera setups and larger displays. This context paints a bleak picture for Apple, which may struggle to replicate its past successes in a market increasingly dominated by local brands.
Apple's introduction of the iPhone 17e aims to target budget-conscious consumers, yet the competitive landscape in China is fierce. The smartphone market has seen a surge in innovation and performance from local companies, making it challenging for Apple to shine without substantial improvements. As consumers grow more discerning, the iPhone 17e's inability to offer features that parallel those of its rivals may limit its appeal, raising questions about Apple's strategy and future in China's smartphone ecosystem.
