Mum who sold 'space cakes' via Instagram while home schooling kids avoids jail

A mother in Liverpool has avoided jail after selling cannabis-infused baked goods on Instagram while home schooling her children.

Charlotte Owens, a 37-year-old mother from Aintree, Liverpool, sold THC-laced 'space cakes' on her Instagram account, 'Spaceicles 420', while home schooling her children. Alongside managing her household, she cared for a child suffering from cystic fibrosis and used her laptop to facilitate these illegal transactions. Her activities came to light during a police investigation into a county lines drug trafficking operation, which ultimately led to a raid on her home.

During the raid in June 2024, officers discovered not only a considerable amount of cannabis but also the tools necessary for producing her baked goods, promotional materials like stickers, and a significant sum of cash. In total, police found £1,020 in cash, which indicated the scale of her operations. Given her circumstances, including her mental health issues and family responsibilities, Owens was spared a prison sentence.

Owens' case raises significant concerns about the intersection of drug use, online sales, and parenting. While authorities continue to crack down on drug trafficking, the leniency shown towards Owens may reflect a broader recognition of the challenges faced by individuals with mental health problems. As society grapples with increasing cannabis-related cases, discussions about the legal implications of such home-based activities, particularly involving vulnerable populations like children, are becoming increasingly relevant.
