Europe's Shield Over Cyprus: After Greece, France Sends Frigate and Anti-Missile Systems
France is bolstering Cyprus's defense with anti-missile systems and a frigate following recent tensions, responding to a request from the Cypriot President.
In light of escalating tensions in the region, France has decided to significantly enhance the defense capabilities of Cyprus by sending anti-missile systems, anti-drone technology, and a frigate. The decision follows a direct communication between Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and French President Emmanuel Macron, where the Cypriot leader requested additional support for the island's defense during their phone calls on Monday.
President Macron informed Christodoulides that France is taking immediate action by deploying anti-missile and anti-drone systems, alongside the frigate, which represents a commitment to safeguarding Cyprus. Additionally, it has been revealed that a second frigate is planned for deployment in the future, further strengthening the military assistance to Cyprus. This move underscores the potential for collaborative defense efforts amid rising geopolitical tensions in the eastern Mediterranean.
The request for military support has also reached German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, highlighting a broader push for coordinated international assistance in defense matters by the Cypriot government. This proactive approach not only aims to fortify Cyprus's defense against looming threats but also signifies the willingness of European nations to contribute to stability in the region, thereby reinforcing the concept of a collective European defense policy.
