HDFC Bank Changes Rules... Charges on UPI Withdrawals from April 1, Know Details
HDFC Bank will implement a charge on UPI cash withdrawals starting April 1, ending the previous system of free withdrawals.
HDFC Bank, India's largest private sector bank, is set to impose new rules for its customers regarding UPI cash withdrawals, effective from April 1. Under the new guidelines, customers using UPI to withdraw cash at HDFC Bank ATMs will find that their monthly limit of free transactions will apply. Once they exceed this limit, they will incur charges for any additional transactions. Previously, there were no charges associated with UPI cash withdrawals.
For HDFC Bank customers, the monthly limit allows for five free ATM withdrawals, while those with accounts in other banks are permitted three free transactions in metropolitan cities and five in non-metropolitan areas. Once a customer exceeds these free transaction limits, any cash withdrawal via UPI will attract a charge of Rs. 23 plus applicable taxes. This marks a significant shift in HDFC Bank's policy regarding UPI transactions, reflecting broader changes in banking practices within the sector.
This decision by HDFC Bank could have implications for consumers who frequently rely on UPI for cash withdrawals, potentially leading to increased costs for those who exceed the free transaction limits. As UPI has gained significant popularity in India for its convenience, banks may begin to find that they need to monetize services that are part of the digital payment ecosystem. Customers are encouraged to be aware of these changes to manage their transactions more effectively and avoid unexpected fees.
