Messolonghi 1826 - 200 Years Since the Exodus
The Benaki Museum is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi with a major exhibition dedicated to this historic event and its heroes.
In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi, the Benaki Museum is hosting a significant exhibition honoring the Sacred City and the bravery of its defenders. The exhibition, which will run until May 3, aims not only to celebrate this pivotal event of the Greek Revolution, which captured the attention of the international community and significantly bolstered Philhellenism but also to highlight the timeless significance of the heroic Exodus of the people of Messolonghi.
The exhibition features around 200 artifacts, including representative paintings, drawings, engravings, books, and various objects that provide a comprehensive showcase of the iconography related to Messolonghi, the national liberation struggle, and Philhellenism. It is organized into six thematic sections which explore crucial aspects of this historic event and its broader context, including Messolonghi before the Revolution, the Greek War of Independence, notable figures such as Markos Botzaris and Lord Byron, and the siege and subsequent Exodus during the years 1825-1826.
This event is of particular importance as it not only serves to educate visitors on the rich history associated with Messolonghi but also aims to inspire a renewed appreciation for the contributions of the fighters of the Greek Revolution to both national and international narratives. The exhibition stands as a tribute to their valor and the pivotal role they played in shaping modern Greek identity and heritage.
