Korean battery cell, material, parts, and equipment companies have expressed their determination to gain a competitive edge in the global battery market, moving beyond China. At the 'Interbattery Awards 2026' ceremony held in Seoul, industry leaders emphasized the strategic importance of expanding into European and American markets to leverage the rising demand for battery supply alternatives to China. This shift is seen as crucial in preparing for a forthcoming 'supercycle' in the battery industry.

During the awards ceremony, executives from major domestic battery manufacturers discussed the competitive landscape driven by advancements and challenges in the industry, particularly those posed by Chinese companies. A representative from LG Energy Solution highlighted the transition from electric vehicles to energy storage systems, indicating their intent to enhance product sophistication to outpace China. Additionally, EcoPro BM, a specialized company in cathode materials, noted the regulatory trends emerging in Europe and the U.S., indicating a need for alternatives like 'lithium iron phosphate' batteries, and emphasized their commitment to research and product development in collaboration with local institutions.

Park Tae-sung, Vice Chairman of the Korea Battery Industry Association, pointed out the multifaceted challenges posed by China and U.S. trade policies, while also recognizing the numerous opportunities that lie ahead. He mentioned the robust local production capabilities of Korean firms in the U.S. and the EU, making them reliable partners as countries seek to reduce their dependence on China. The ceremony coincided with the lead-up to the 'Interbattery 2026' exhibition, showcasing innovative products from 25 participating companies, with notable achievements recognized among major industry players like LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI.
