Once Popular, Gasoline Medium Hatches Now Cost Over R$ 300,000 in the Country
The introduction of the BMW M135 to the Brazilian market signals a shift in the medium hatchback segment towards premium sporty cars, with prices exceeding R$ 300,000.
The entry of the BMW M135 into the Brazilian market marks a significant transformation in the medium hatchback segment, which has now become a niche for premium sports cars. The M135 features a 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine producing 317 horsepower, priced at R$ 459,950. It boasts all-wheel drive, a dual-clutch automatic transmission with seven speeds, and an impressive acceleration of zero to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, appealing to performance-oriented consumers.
The M135 faces stiff competition from other premium models, including the Volkswagen Golf GTI starting at R$ 430,000, the Honda Civic Type R at R$ 435,500, and the Toyota GR Corolla, priced at R$ 416,990 despite still being from the 2024 lineup. The lowest-priced option in the combustion engine category is the Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TFSI, priced at R$ 344,990, which, while more affordable, still reflects the overall trend towards high-cost medium hatchbacks.
Significantly, only 268 units of the Audi A3 were registered in 2025, making it the leader of this niche segment, which saw a mere 525 total registrations last year, accounting for just 0.03% market share, highlighting the exclusivity and the premium nature of this market shift in Brazil's automotive landscape.
