50 Heroes Who Shined in Daegu and Gyeongbuk... Encountered through the Webtoon 'Gwiinok'

A webtoon titled 'Gwiinok' features 50 notable figures from the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, bringing their stories to life for broader recognition.

The Gyeongbuk province has launched a webtoon named 'Gwiinok' to familiarize a wider audience with 50 distinguished individuals from the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Gyeongbuk Cultural Foundation's Content Promotion Agency, aims to celebrate local history and identity. The figures highlighted in the webtoon include prominent characters like Shin Dol-seok, a civilian resistance leader during the Japanese colonial period, and Wonhyo, a revered monk from the Silla period.

The narrative of 'Gwiinok' follows the protagonist, Yoon Ja-young, who possesses the ability to meet these historical figures one by one, allowing for a richer storytelling experience that emphasizes the accomplishments and spirit of these heroes. Rather than merely presenting factual biographies, the webtoon reinterprets these individuals in a more relatable manner, integrating fantasy and action elements to enhance educational value and entertainment. Currently, seven episodes featuring 15 of the 50 figures have been released on KakaoPage, available for free to the public.

Gyeongbuk province plans to promote this webtoon internationally by adding translations in English, Chinese, and Japanese. There are also intentions to develop associated content programs using the webtoon as a springboard. Park Chan-woo, head of the Cultural, Tourism, and Sports Department in Gyeongbuk, expressed hopes that 'Gwiinok' would allow for the sharing of the stories of these notable figures with the public and reignite pride in the region's historical characters.
