Structural failure and omission: ALMT report points out problems in combating femicide in MT
A preliminary report from the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly's thematic committee on combating femicide highlights significant issues in the state's approach to this violence, including government inaction, structural failures, and a lack of budget execution.
A preliminary report from the Thematic Sector Chamber on combating femicide in the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly (ALMT) was released, revealing serious shortcomings in the state's efforts to address femicide. The document identified government inaction in coordinating public policy, structural failures in combating violence against women, inadequate budget execution, and the fragility of the women's protection network as major barriers to effectively tackling this issue.
Mato Grosso's femicide rate is alarmingly higher than the national average, with over two cases per 100 women, and in some municipalities, the rates are significantly greater. Notably, Cáceres tops the list with a shocking 15.3% rate, followed by Lucas do Rio Verde at 14.6%, Sinop at 14.3%, Sorriso at 12.8%, and Rondonópolis at 9.1%. Even Várzea Grande, which records a lower rate of 6.3%, demonstrates cause for concern.
Cuiabá, the state's capital, despite having better infrastructure and 24-hour police stations for women's support, still experiences femicide rates surpassing the national average. This highlights the urgent need for effective policy coordination and implementation to ensure the safety and protection of women in Mato Grosso, as the current measures are evidently insufficient and need significant improvement.
