Police heighten vigilance in Kano over Shi’ite protests

The Kano State Police have increased security measures in response to unplanned protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, ensuring the demonstrations remain peaceful.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has announced increased security measures in response to protests by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) in Kano. The protests occurred without prior notification to the police but were detected by the police intelligence unit, prompting a rapid deployment of officers to various locations to facilitate the protests and maintain peace. Given that the demonstrations took place during Ramadan, extra caution was exercised to prevent any unrest due to the high sensitivity of the situation.

On Sunday, members of the IMN gathered at the Fegge Central Mosque in Kofar Waika for a procession mourning the reported death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who allegedly was killed in a coordinated US-Israeli attack. The demonstrators participated in a peaceful rally, kneeling on the roads as an act of mourning. While the march was initially peaceful, the police presence was heightened to ensure that the situation remained controlled and that there was no escalation into violence.

The police have confirmed that officers are strategically deployed across various parts of the state and are actively monitoring the actions of the protesters. This response reflects the police's commitment to maintaining public order amid sensitive political and religious sentiments, particularly during a time when many residents are observing fasting during Ramadan. It underscores the delicate nature of policing in regions where demonstrations can quickly escalate if not properly managed.
