Roberto Ibáñez, Deputy Minister of Sports: 'There is no legal basis for that directory' and opens the door to intervene the COE
Roberto Ibáñez, the Deputy Minister of Sports in Ecuador, declared that there is no legal basis for the current board of the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) and suggested the possibility of intervention.
Roberto Ibáñez, the Deputy Minister of Sports for Ecuador, has made a significant statement regarding the current leadership of the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE). He highlighted that the General Prosecutor's Office did not support the legality of the existing board led by Jorge Delgado Panchana and Jefferson Pérez, emphasizing there is no legal foundation for its recognition. This statement stemmed from a recent consultation with Minister Gilda Alcívar and was focused solely on the COE's issues, without any connection to other sporting electoral processes.
Ibáñez reiterated the that the current regulation prohibits any sports leader from serving more than two consecutive terms, which the previous law also supported. He informed that, according to the Procurator's reaffirmation of his position, this implies that the election of the current board is illegitimate. This scrutiny into the COE's leadership threatens to destabilize its operations and potentially lead to new political changes within the organization.
He urged the COE to undertake immediate corrective measures to comply with legal stipulations, hinting at possible interventions by the Ministry of Sports and calling for discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This situation presents a critical moment for Ecuadorian sports governance, where the integrity and structure of its Olympic representation are at stake, indicating potential international implications if swift resolutions are not achieved.
