'We are close to an Olympic suspension': COE denounces state pressure following conflict with Fedeguayas

The Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) is facing potential Olympic suspension due to state interference in its governance amid a conflict with the Guayas Sports Federation (Fedeguayas).

The ongoing institutional dispute between the Guayas Sports Federation (Fedeguayas) and the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) has escalated, leading to a legal statement from the Olympic body. Francisco Moreno, a legal representative for the COE, shared insights with EL UNIVERSO regarding the legal foundations on which the Committee rejects the state's invasion of its facilities. Additionally, there is a contention regarding the Ministry of Sports' refusal to recognize the board elected in May 2025, which Moreno claims is compliant with the Sports Law and the Olympic Charter.

The conflict centers on two critical issues: first, the lease agreement signed in 1982 for a duration of 50 years, which remains in effect and cannot be terminated unilaterally; and second, the lack of official recognition for the board led by Jorge Delgado and Jefferson Pérez. Moreno argues that this situation reflects state interference that jeopardizes the autonomy of the Ecuadorian Olympic movement. The implications of this conflict are significant, threatening the country's standing within the Olympic community and its athletes' participation in future events.

Should the tensions continue to rise without resolution, the COE warns that Ecuador is nearing an Olympic suspension, which would disrupt not only the governance of sports in the country but also impact athletes' opportunities to compete at international levels. This indicates the critical need for both the COE and state entities to find common ground to preserve the integrity of Ecuadorian sports and its representation in the Olympic arena.
