School lunch arrives late and with insufficient stock in state schools of Manaus

In Manaus, state schools are facing delays in the delivery of school lunches and insufficient supplies, raising concerns about the quality of meals for students.

The academic year for public education in Amazonas began on February 5, but a recent inspection revealed that ten schools only received their food supplies on March 2, highlighting a significant delay. This inspection, conducted by the Tribunal de Contas do Amazonas (TCE-AM), aimed to ensure compliance with the nutritional needs of students.

Further findings indicated that the amount of food delivered to schools is inadequate, with supplies that should last for about 20 days projected to run out in less than ten due to the number of students enrolled. This shortage not only affects quantity but threatens the nutritional quality of the meals offered, as the menus were found to be limited.

The TCE-AM’s inspection included checks on kitchens, dining areas, and food storage facilities, reviewing the preparation process and distribution of meals. Given the critical role of school meals in children's health and education, these shortcomings could have serious implications for student well-being and academic performance in the region.
