Flávio included as Bolsonaro's lawyer to have more access to his father
Flávio Bolsonaro has been appointed as his father's lawyer to secure increased access as Jair Bolsonaro continues to face legal challenges.
The Brazilian Supreme Court minister, Alexandre de Moraes, recently denied a new request for house arrest for former president Jair Bolsonaro. In response, Flávio Bolsonaro, currently a senator and a pre-candidate for the presidency, has been listed as one of his father's attorneys in the ongoing coup-related legal proceedings. This appointment provides Flávio with unrestricted access to Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently detained at the Papudinha prison in Brasília.
Previously, Flávio had a modified visiting privilege allowing him to see his father on specified days without needing prior approval for each visit, but now his role as the defense attorney will significantly broaden that interaction. Supporters within the Liberal Party (PL), to which both Jair and Flávio belong, consider this increase in contact vital. The former president's input is seen as essential for determining candidates aligned with his ideology for upcoming Senate elections, and discussions have already begun regarding the campaign strategies for Flávio in various states.
Party insiders have expressed concern over Bolsonaro’s isolation, pointing towards the strategic necessity for Flávio to maintain close contact. By empowering him within the legal framework, the PL aims to strengthen its influence and communication flow, navigating the complexities of political campaigning under such unprecedented legal constraints. This move reflects an increasing urgency among Jair Bolsonaro’s allies to maintain a united front amid his ongoing legal struggles.
