Recent tensions surrounding the war in Iran have brought to light significant concerns regarding Cyprus's preparedness for potential conflict. Currently, Cyprus operates approximately 2,500 shelters; however, these facilities can only accommodate 45% of the population, leaving more than half of citizens unprotected. Maria Papa, head of Civil Defense, noted the inadequacy of the current shelter capacity, urging improvements and adaptations to ensure public safety.

In light of the geopolitical crises, the Civil Defense has issued recommendations on how to reinforce existing buildings and designated outdoor areas for better protection against potential threats. Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou emphasized that, historically, the shelter capacity was around 30%, indicating a slow progression in preparedness measures. As tensions escalate, the urgency for new measures and incentives to encourage the integration of shelters into new constructions has grown paramount.

The situation places significant pressure on the government to act swiftly in enhancing civil protection infrastructure. Discussions have emerged regarding the potential strategies to boost the number of effective shelters, as well as the need for the public to be more informed and prepared.
