British military base and Paphos airport evacuated in Cyprus

Following an attack by an Iranian drone at the Akrotiri base, the British military evacuated personnel from both the base and Paphos airport.

The evacuation of the British military base at Akrotiri in Cyprus occurred just hours after the impact of an Iranian drone 'Shahed', which caused minor damages as reported by Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides. The Akrotiri base serves as a key British overseas territory and is located near the southern coastal city of Limassol. Sirens were reported at the base during the evacuation process, which saw around 70 vehicles, predominantly civilian, leaving the southern end of the island around noon local time.

State broadcaster 'CyBC' confirmed the evacuation, reporting the simultaneous launch of three fighter jets from the base as part of a defensive response. Additionally, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, a government spokesperson, indicated on the platform 'X' that two drones approaching the British bases at Akrotiri were neutralized in a timely manner. This proactive measure underscores the heightened security situation in the region following the drone attack.

The Cypriot Interior Ministry subsequently announced the evacuation not only from the vicinity of Akrotiri but also from Paphos airport, which is one of the two international airports under government control. The developments indicate a serious escalation in tensions involving foreign military installations on the island, reflecting broader geopolitical dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly with regards to Iranian military activities.
